Couple severely injured in Anchorage hit-and-run incident

After a night out in Anchorage, a couple with three young children were run down by a driver who then left the scene.

The incident occurred in the early morning hours of June 1. The victims, both 34, had been walking home together when a red car pulled up. Two men allegedly got out of the vehicle and exchanged a few terse words with the victims before getting back into their car. Then, the car rapidly sped up and smashed into the victims before disappearing into the darkness.

The male victim suffered a broken ankle, and was released from the hospital two days after the hit-and-run. His girlfriend, however, was more severely injured. She is expected to live, but suffered a serious head injury, a cracked neck, devastating damage to her hip bones, and a variety of cuts, scrapes and bruises.

Police are on the lookout for the driver who caused the hit-and-run.

In many hit-and-run cases, the driver is never successfully identified, and thus cannot be held accountable for the damages incurred by the victims. However, victims of hit-and-run drivers may have the option to seek compensation for their injuries from their own insurance policies.

Uninsured/Underinsured motorist coverage can provide you with compensation if you were harmed by a driver who was not later apprehended. It does not matter if you were actually in a vehicle at the time you were harmed; pedestrians are still covered by their uninsured/underinsured motorist policies. In fact, even if you don't own a vehicle and do not have your own auto insurance, if you live with a family member who carries uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, you may be able to pursue compensation under your family member's policy.
