Aviation accident death toll in Alaska increases from last year

Any type of accident can be a dramatic experience for both those in the accident and the families as well. Across the United States, countless accidents of all types happen every day. Whether it is a car, boat, or aviation accident, those involved can be seriously injured or worse. No matter what the vehicle, the sometimes hazardous conditions in Alaska can make operating the vehicle that much more difficult and risky.

This sobering fact has been more present in Alaska this year, since it has been one of the deadliest aviation seasons ever. NTSB investigators say they have never had a busier summer in Alaska dealing with aviation accidents. Road passages are limited, even in the summer, and flying is often the only way to get to some areas.

Even though the overall number of crashes has decreased from 69 to 52 this year, the number of fatal aviation accidents has increased from five to nine. The number of actual fatalities has also increased, from five last year to 25 this year. Weather is always a significant factor, and most Alaskans understand that the weather can rapidly change when a pilot is in the air.

Unfortunately, this year the families of 25 aviation accident victims must deal with the pain of losing a loved one. Not only will these families have emotional pain, but there could also be a possible financial burden placed on the families in the form of funeral costs and other final expenses. If the crash was the result of another party's negligence, though, the family may seek compensation in order to lighten these financial strains. Though this can never take away the pain of losing a loved one, a successfully litigated claim could allow the family to focus on what is important -- getting through this tragic and difficult time.
