Drunk driving accident leads to manslaughter charges

The first alcohol-related crash in over two years took place in the early morning of June 30, according to Alaskan authorities. The drunk driving accident took place in Anchorage and claimed the life of one woman and has injured several other people. The man deemed responsible is now in custody facing several charges.

Anchorage authorities report the 22-year-old man, a first-class airman at a local air force base, admitted to drinking prior to the accident. He ran a red light while speeding and collided with another vehicle, killing the driver on impact. He was arrested shortly thereafter.

Three passengers in his vehicle and four in the other vehicle all suffered injuries of varying severity. They were all taken to local medical centers for care, and as of this writing there is no word as to their conditions. The accused man is being held on $50,000 bond, and since it has been determined that his military pay may not be sufficient for him to afford a defense lawyer, he has been assigned representation by the court. He faces a charge of manslaughter, DUI, and seven counts of assault.

A drunk driving accident is particularly tragic because of how truly avoidable such an accident can be. If the man is found guilty of the DUI charge, the surviving passengers and the next-of-kin of the deceased driver will have more than adequate precedent to seek personal injury law suits and a wrongful death suit, respectively, against the driver. Such suits will be dealt with separately from any criminal charges, in an Anchorage civil court.
