Car accident numbers in Alaska may increase in winter

The change from fall to winter is in full swing all across the northern part of the United States, but in Alaska winter is not waiting to unleash its devastating weather on the last frontier. Many roads are iced over, which makes it even more dangerous to drive in the Alaskan weather. Already icy roads are real dangers that could cause a car accident at almost any time. Now drivers have to be more careful when they are driving from place to place.

The newly iced over roads have caused cars to slide through intersections. In addition, major road systems have been completely shut down. Many car accidents have been caused by the slippery roads, and more accidents are bound to happen before winter is over. By mid-afternoon on Nov. 8, Alaskan police had already answered five calls about car accidents involving injuries in the Anchorage area.

At 6 p.m., there were 67 accidents without injuries. There were also 33 "vehicle distress calls," where someone got their car stuck with no safe exit route. These accidents closed off more roads throughout the day, including one street where a woman crashed into a house. Unsafe roads were also shut down.

If someone is injured in a car accident in Alaska that resulted from another car colliding with them because of unsafe driving on the icy roads, any seriously injured victims have the right to seek reimbursement of financial losses sustained. These damages could be awarded if the accident was caused by driver negligence. Any compensation ultimately awarded could be used to defray hospital bills and other costs and items of damage attributable to the accident and injuries which resulted.
