Alaska pilot killed in plane crash

Plane crashes in Alaska occur far too frequently, often leaving surviving family members mourning a loss. Sadly, a young pilot did not survive a recent crash involving a Cessna 150 in Matanuska-Susitna Borough. His death is the 22nd plane crash in the state this year.

A witness who was driving near the crash site saw the plane plunge to the ground on a nearby road, approximately a mile away from the Houston High School. That person called 911 to alert emergency personnel. Fire fighters reached the scene but were unable to help the man, as the plane was consumed by fire by that time. Reportedly, it appeared that all but the tail of the plane was completely destroyed.

Other witnesses also saw the 23-year-old pilot take off and then crash, while family members and friends provided his identity to the responding state trooper. At the time of a report on the accident, it was not known what caused the crash. An investigator from the National Transportation Safety Board was expected at the scene to begin an inspection into the cause of the tragedy.

If the NTSB inspection documents a malfunction of the plane as the cause of the accident, the man's family members may want to consider filing a lawsuit against the manufacturer of the plane and/or of any parts that may have been defective. The surviving family members of a deceased plane crash victim in Alaska have the right to seek restitution from those who believed responsible for a fatal accident. To prevail, however, it will be necessary to prove the accident occurred due to negligence other than pilot error.
