NTSB publishes recommendations in report after Alaska plane crash

Alaska has been the site of numerous plane crashes in recent years. The National Transportation Safety Board published its conclusive report on one plane crash that occurred in 2013. The crash killed all 10 people who were on board the aircraft..

The report stated that the most likely reason for the crash was an incorrect estimation of cargo and passenger weight. It was determined that neither the actual weight of the load nor an approximated guess of the weights of the passengers, with an additional 10 pounds per person, was calculated before the flight. It also appeared that no balance computations were made. The report claims that had it been mandatory for the operator to make precise notations on the flight manifest, he would have seen the problems and could have corrected them before the plane took off.

The Federal Aviation Administration currently has regulations that specify limitations of weight at the time of takeoff, but pilots do not have to annotate the information for the type of single-engine craft that was used for that flight. Officials with the NTSB have made several recommendations to the FAA concerning documentation of weight and balance calculations after similar crashes that occurred over the past 30 years. To date, the FAA has chosen not to apply those recommendations.

The type of miscalculation that causes a plane crash and the death of passengers may lead to lawsuits by surviving family members. If evidence of negligence is successfully presented, the resulting financial compensation can be used to relieve financial burdens stemming from the accident. Alaska family members who are facing tragic losses of this type may want to speak to experienced aviation attorneys to learn more about their legal options.
