Toddler ejected upon impact in drunk driving accident in Alaska

A mother in Alaska who was driving a vehicle with her toddler riding as a passenger seems to have done everything she could to keep her little one safe during travel. Police say that the 1-year-old child was properly restrained in a car seat in the rear of the vehicle. The child's mother, nor the other drivers involved, had any way of knowing that they were about to become involved in a serious collision. The alleged drunk driving accident left at least seven people with injuries.

The crash took place just after 2 p.m. on a recent Monday. A 58-year-old man, who has prior convictions for DUI, theft and assault, apparently drove his truck into oncoming traffic and hit the vehicle carrying the little girl and her mother. Both were injured, and the seat belt that was holding the child's car seat in place was actually torn away from the seat on impact, ejecting the child.

Two other vehicles were also hit in the collision. Several victims suffered multiple broken ribs. The man deemed responsible underwent a blood test at the hospital, the results of which showed his blood alcohol content level to be four times the legal driving limit. Since then, police have reportedly issued a warrant for the man's arrest.

It is understandable if a victim who survives a drunk driving accident becomes frustrated and angry, since most incidents of that type might have been prevented were it not for someone's poor choice to get behind the wheel of a car after drinking alcoholic beverages. Alaska law allows injured victims to seek justice by filing personal injury claims in civil court. When a child of minor age is among the injured, a parent or legal guardian is able to act on his or her behalf.
