Car accident in Alaska re cars stopped for caribou

Accidents often occur because of drunk drivers or other negligence behind the wheel. In Alaska, other unique factors may pose obstacles to motorists on the highway. A recent car accident involved two vehicles and, apparently, a herd of caribou on the road.

It was approximately 1 p.m. on a recent Thursday when the car accident occurred. Authorities say that several vehicles had stopped on the roadway in order to wait for a passing herd of caribou to cross over to the other side of the road. An approaching vehicle allegedly failed to stop and crashed into another car.

The driver of the car that hit the one in front of it later said that he did not realize at the time that the other vehicles had stopped. Both cars were totaled in the sudden collision. The 18-year-old who appears to have caused the accident and the other driver were both taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries they suffered in the crash.

Police say that the young man was cited for negligent driving in the incident. When a person suffers personal injury in a car accident that was caused by another motorist's negligence, Alaskan law allows the injured victim to take legal action in civil court against the driver deemed responsible for the injuries. When a claim is successfully litigated, the court can award compensation appropriate to the damages sustained by the victim in the accident. The monetary award can then be used to help cover medical costs, replace lost wages or offset other financial losses incurred.
