Second fatal aviation accident in a month in remote Alaska region

Another airplane tragedy has occurred in Alaska. It is the second fatal aviation accident in the same remote region in the past month. At the time of the media report concerning the tragedy, authorities had not released the identities of those who died in the crash, as the surviving relatives had not been notified.

The commuter plane company involved in both situations was Ravn, which is operated by Hageland Aviation Services. The operating company and its own parent company had been subject to an urgent audit recommendation after several air accidents between 2012 and 2014. The parent company is said to be one of the busiest commuter flight enterprises in the state.

Since that time, it appears a new control center was installed, which a chief for the National Transportation Safety Board described as "state-of-the-art" and unlike all others in Alaska. Sadly, the control center did not prevent three people from losing their lives in the most recent incident. Reports indicate the Cessna 208 sent a distress signal just before slamming into the mountainside in a remote area, accessible only by helicopter.

An aviation accident such as this one often raises many questions as to whether pilot negligence may have been a causal factor in the crash. Plans were made for state troopers to transport investigators to the collision site. It was determined that no one survived the crash; efforts to recover the bodies of the deceased were soon to be underway. In situations where a family has lost a loved one in a plane crash caused by operator negligence, there are typically grounds for filing wrongful death claims against any party or parties deemed responsible. A claim can be filed against a decedent's estate, if necessary.
