Simple miscommunication can lead to catastrophic plane crashes

Flying a plane takes great skill and concentration, even with all the advancements and features found in modern aircrafts. It is crucial that pilots are trained, alert and communicating clearly whenever they are flying.

Even a momentary lapse in focus or contact has the potential to lead to mistakes that have devastating consequences for pilots, passengers and anyone near a plane if it crashes. Thankfully, actor Harrison Ford was able to just barely avoid a potentially life-threatening accident recently after an apparent miscommunication while he was landing his small, single-engine plane.

According to reports, air traffic controllers told Ford that he was cleared to land on a specific runway. However, he accidentally landed on a landing strip running right next to the one that controllers had cleared.

As he landed, Ford evidently flew just over an American Airlines commercial jet, narrowly missing a collision. Luckily, no one was injured and everyone arrived safely at their destination.

The miscommunication is troubling, however. Was it a simple mistake on Ford's part? Was he fit to be operating the plane at that time? Were the runways not clearly identified or marked? Was there a mechanical malfunction? These are all questions that will likely need answers following a thorough investigation.

This near-crash is a strong reminder of how quickly a plane crash can happen and how little control passengers and others have in these situations. Had Ford's plane collided with the American Airlines plane, the 116 people on board would have had no warning and no way to protect themselves.

However, plane crash victims and their families can protect themselves in the aftermath of an accident by filing a lawsuit. Identifying the negligent or reckless party who caused or contributed to a crash and then holding that party liable can help those affected by a crash pursue the compensation and accountability they may desperately need and deserve.
