Investigating fishing boat accidents: complex but crucial

Crab fishing is an important industry for workers and consumers here in Alaska and across the country. However, it is also extremely dangerous, as accidents have the potential to be deadly. Boats can capsize or sink and fishermen can get seriously injured or drown if a boat is unsafe or crashes.

Considering all the damage that can be done in a crab boat accident, it is crucial that every incident is thoroughly investigated. In some cases, an investigation can reveal serious problems with the boat, evidence of failed repairs or operation, or other indications of negligence, which is crucial to identify in terms of collecting damages.

Unfortunately, there are serious obstacles that can arise and make it very difficult to determine what went wrong before a boating accident.

For instance, last month, a 95-foot crabbing vessel went missing in the Bering Sea. The Coast Guard searched for the boat without success and has now suspended their efforts. Investigators are trying to piece together what happened, but they have very little to go on. Without the boat or information from a mayday call, investigators may never find an answer to why the boat disappeared.

After other fishing boat accidents, however, there is usually more information for investigators to look at. Boat parts can be retrieved and examined; crew members can be questioned about the details of an incident; the boat's history can shed some light on known problems; decisions of the captain can be reviewed.

Investigating a fishing boat accident can be complex no matter how much information investigators have, and it is vital that every incident be thoroughly investigated by federal agencies, law enforcement authorities and legal representatives. Once there are more answers than questions, victims of the accident and their families can file a claim for damages from the appropriate party and begin rebuilding their lives.
