Alaska is home to some of the most dangerous jobs

If you ever turn on the TV and see dramatic reality shows chronicling the challenges people face in high-risk jobs, it might seem adventurous and even kind of fun. Of course, this is the allure of such shows, but such occupations are always dangerous, often injurious and sometimes deadly. Alaska is home to many of the jobs profiled on programs such as Ice Road Truckers and Deadliest Catch.

Getting injured when on the job is no small matter, and in addition to the physical consequences, it can leave you out of work and without income for an extended period of time. Anybody who has been hurt or had a loved one killed on the job should be aware of the legal recourse that is available.

Trucking on remote and icy roads

Trucking is a dangerous job in and of itself. Many drivers work excessive hours and get little sleep, and safely navigating an 18-wheeler requires caution, skill and experience. Add ice into the equation, and the risk multiplies. In an area such as Alaska that is so frequently snowy and icy, this is easily one of the deadliest jobs.

Working on commercial fishing vessels

According to CNN, fatalities for crab fishing in Alaska are 80 times the average. It is not uncommon for fishermen to fall overboard in hostile waters, and drowning or hypothermia may then claim their lives. Because there is also heavy machinery on deck, staff are susceptible to injuries that can result from misuse or malfunction of the ship’s gear.

Flying private airplanes and jets

Flying is yet another career choice that is often risky on its own, but many of the airports in Alaska are remote, and the aircraft commonly flown are small. This can put pilots and passengers at an increased risk. When an aircraft crashes in Alaska, it can easily become a deadly situation for everybody on board.
