Drivers are most dangerous to themselves

Drivers across Alaska have many unique concerns to consider while on the road, but fearing that another driver could cause an accident is at the top of the minds of many. A new study shows that this fear may be unfounded, and drivers' greatest threat may be themselves.

According to WTOP, single car accidents are the most prevalent, and the deadliest. A study from AAA studied crash data and found that 55 percent of all fatal crashes are accidents that do not involve any other vehicle, although they may include a pedestrian or cyclist. Of these accidents, 70 percent include the vehicle running off the road or crossing the center line. These accidents may be due to distraction, falling asleep behind the wheel, being under the influence of alcohol or drugs or speeding. Of all of the deadly single-vehicle crashes studied, 20 percent were a result of the car rolling over, even though only 3 percent of all accidents include the car flipping. Some of these accidents were the result of the car hitting an object, such as a pole or tree, and in some cases were caused by trying to avoid a crash.

Although drivers are apparently their own worst enemies, 96 percent of all driver studied fear being hit by a driver flying through a red light and 86 percent of them fear a distracted driver will crash into them. Yet there is good news. Everquote Inc. rated Alaska drivers the third best in the nation in their 2016 Safe Driving Report. Only 20 percent of trips in the state include speeding, which is significantly better than the rest of the country.
