Safe helicopter landing tips

Alaskan helicopter pilots may one day face a situation in which the engine stalls or cuts out completely. Fortunately, there are failsafes in place to keep the plane from plummeting to the ground once the engine stops working.

Gizmodo has an article detailing the way helicopters are designed to fall in the case of a landing emergency. This is accomplished through autorotation. In a scenario like this, the engine is built to disengage from the main rotor. In doing so, the rotor can spin freely. As long as the pilot maintains control over the descent, which they should be trained to do, then it's possible to use the main rotor's propelling to guide the helicopter down in a glide toward the ground below.

Business Insider goes so far as to call this type of helicopter landing a "miracle of physics", in which pilots are trained to find how to adjust the tilt of their fans to catch surrounding air movement. In doing so, this allows the pilot to slow their descent to a reasonable pace, avoiding the problem of "falling out of the air like a rock" which many people seem to be concerned about when it comes to helicopter safety.

Unfortuntely, there are still some instances in which helicopters can indeed crash. Though rare because of the extensive training that helicopter pilots face, it is still possible for something to go wrong during the attempt at landing, causing the helicopter to drop suddenly. This is why the safety of learning and practicing proper landings is emphasized.
