Cellphone rules for truck drivers

Truck drivers in Alaska may not always think about the rules which govern their cellphone usage behind the wheel. However, some of these rules can be far-reaching and it is important to understand the ways these devices can legally be used on the road.

Alaska has several rules about cellphone use behind the wheel. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, texting while driving is illegal for every driver. However, general cellphone usage is allowed and there is no ban on hand-held devices.

While some truck drivers may think these are relatively easy rules to abide by, they may be required to follow additional rules about cellphones, especially if they drive a commercial motor vehicle. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration says that CMV drivers are not allowed to hold their phones or dial while driving. There may be times, though, when a trucker needs to make a phone call on the road. It is recommended that truck drivers use an earpiece so they can make these calls while keeping both hands on the wheel. If drivers opt to use the speaker phone, the cellphone should usually be within reach so truckers can use it without needing to remove their seat belts.

It can be easy to think that a texting ban applies only to text messages. However, the number of buttons a trucker can press while driving falls under the texting ban. If a truck driver needs to press multiple buttons to end a call or navigate a website, these actions are also typically forbidden. Additionally, this ban covers many forms of communication. Truck drivers usually cannot send instant messages and emails on the road.
