Is this negligent driving behavior?

As someone who spends time on Alaskan roads, you know that some driving habits and behaviors are more dangerous than others. The behaviors that are considered negligent, for example, can net you jail time, fines, or license suspension. But what exactly negligent driving behaviors?

Reverso Dictionary states that negligence is any action that is done without care or thought. This act can also just be lacking in attention, or may involve the habitual ignoring of duties and tasks. Keeping this definition in mind, negligent driving is therefore a careless act that's performed while you're behind the wheel. This behavior reflects either an intentional disregard for the laws of the road, or demonstrates an inability for you to focus on responsible and safe driving. More direct examples of this negligence can include:

  • Driving while texting
  • Driving after drinking
  • Ignoring road signs
  • Failure to stop or yield

Distracted driving is a large umbrella that negligent acts can fall under, as well. For example, if you focus on other tasks like talking to a passenger, changing the music, eating, or putting on makeup, your distraction is equivalent to intentional carelessness and is therefore considered negligent behavior.

Negligent driving charges can also exist separately from other driving charges. What does this mean for you? Basically, if your main charge was caused by negligent driving behaviors, you can be slapped with an additional charge for that negligence, too. For this reason, it's important for all drivers to realize just how big of an impact negligent driving can have.
