A quick guide to recreational accidents and injuries

Anchorage is a great place to enjoy nature. With plenty of hiking, kayaking, skiing and snowboarding opportunities, you can have a lot of fun here. Unfortunately, sometimes these recreational activities result in injuries, turning a day outdoors into a hospital trip.

Some recreational injuries can occur from the aggressive nature of the activity, but sometimes they result from some type of negligence. Read below to learn more about recreational accidents.

Common recreational injuries

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, sports and exercising accidents can result in:

  • Strains or sprains
  • Achilles tendon damage
  • Swollen muscles
  • Knee injuries
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Dislocations
  • Broken bones

However, since there are plenty of outdoor activities to partake in, there can be numerous types of injuries. The most severe cases involve traumatic brain injuries or spinal cord injuries, either of which could be fatal.

Liability for recreational accidents

Negligence often leads to accidents when people do not perform tasks as carefully as they should, or they fail to take necessary precautions. People who may contribute to a recreational injury through a lapse of responsibilities include:

  • Instructors
  • Coaches
  • Hiking guides
  • Other participants

If any of these parties do not exercise proper care to make sure you are safe, you may be able to hold them liable in court for the damages they caused in your life.

Legal action

Suppose your hiking guide fails to inform you about ice on the trail, and you slip and fall and sustain a head injury. Or, perhaps your kayaking guide fails to equip you with the proper safety gear. Either of these instances may cause a devastating blow. Not only could you sustain a temporary or permanent disability, you could also lose income from work and face costly medical bills. If you need help proving negligence and acquiring compensation for your injury, it is a good idea to talk to a personal injury attorney about your situation.
