How common is human error in place crashes?

Because of Alaska’s sheer size, air travel may be a way of life for you and many other residents, but traveling by plane also involves inherent risks. Nowadays, the majority of plane crashes arise from four distinct circumstances, and these include weather conditions, mechanical failures, intentional actions and human errors.

Just how frequently is human error a factor in modern plane crashes? Per, human error is the single-biggest cause of modern plane crashes, and pilot errors, specifically, played a role in more than half of all fatal plane crashes that occurred worldwide over a 60-year period. Pilots are not solely responsible for human error-caused plane crashes, however. Air traffic controller and mechanic errors, too, are often to blame.

In fact, human error by pilots, mechanics and air traffic controllers is such a frequent factor in plane accidents that representatives from Boeing, the world’s largest aerospace company, believe it plays a role in closer to 80 percent of plane crashes. Exact statistics, however, are not currently available.

While human error, in and of itself, is a root cause for many plane crashes, human errors can also compound with other common causes of plane crashes, such as inclement weather. For example, if a pilot begins experiencing mechanical failure, but he or she is also having a hard time seeing what lies ahead due to weather, the pilot may be more inclined to make a potentially life-threatening mistake.

While this information about common causes of modern plane crashes is informative, it is not a replacement for legal advice.
