Keeping helicopter tours safe for tourists

When people visit Alaska, they may sometimes wish to take a helicopter tour. Some people may worry about how safe this activity is. According to Fox News, the number of helicopter accidents that occur each year has been steadily decreasing.

Since 2013, the number of helicopter accidents that occur has declined by about one third. Most of the time, accidents occur because a pilot makes mistakes or is inexperienced. Faulty equipment also causes choppers to crash. In 2017, 20 fatal crashes occurred, while helicopters were involved in 121 reported accidents. It is estimated that for every 100,000 flight hours, only about 3.55 accidents took place.

Steps are being taken to ensure that fewer crashes occur. The Federal Aviation Administration says that organizations are advocating policies and technology that will help keep people safe when they are in a helicopter. Newer models of helicopters are required to have technology that can keep the vehicle stable if a bird flies into it and prevent the aircraft from catching fire in the event that a crash does occur. Additionally, new technology can make helicopters safer for passengers. Surveillance systems that offer detailed information about a helicopter's exact location can make it safer for these aircraft to operate in busy airspace.

Commercial helicopter companies are also encouraged to make sure that safety is part of the company culture. This includes making sure that pilots and mechanics participate in safety training programs. This focus on safety allows pilots to report potentially dangerous flying conditions without worrying that they might jeopardize their job. Additionally, companies offering these tours are required to implement rigorous policies to keep people safe.
