How can you drive safely on the ice?

As a resident of Alaska, you aren't a stranger to poor winter road conditions. However, this can lead to some people letting their guards down and ending up in crashes despite their familiarity with the terrain. Here are some tips you can use to help increase your safety on an icy road.

AAA Exchange starts with the following recommendations for safe winter driving, starting with tire safety, driver safety, and car maintenance. Tire safety includes having the right types of tires for the terrain and not mixing tire types. All four of your wheels should be the same type of tire, as they may not function properly otherwise. During summer, the level of ice in many places will decrease or disappear entirely, so you don't need heavy-duty wheels. Some traction is important, though.

Driver safety includes anything related to your behavior as a driver. Never drive while fatigued. Always pay attention to the road. Don't use cruise control if the road isn't in peak condition. Remember that speed limits are set with ideal weather in mind. Use your seatbelt, and turn slowly when you approach corners.

Finally, maintenance revolves around the care of your vehicle. Always keep the tank of gas at at least half-full, to prevent your gas lines from freezing. If your tires are damaged by ice or snow in any way, get them replaced as soon as possible. Make sure your tires are inflated well, and that your brakes are always in top condition. In doing so, you'll be able to cut down on your chances of getting into a crash.
