What should I know to avoid a drowsy driving accident?

If you are like many Americans, you spend a good portion of your time deprived of sleep. Unfortunately, that may also mean getting behind the wheel when you have had inadequate rest. Whether during your work commute or while taking a road trip, you and other Alaskans are at risk of sleep-related crashes if you or someone sharing the road you are driving drowsy.

How bad is the problem? According to the National Sleep Foundation, 60 percent of people in recent surveys admitted to having driven while drowsy in the past year. Even more concerning, 37 percent said they had fallen asleep at the wheel, while 13 percent say they regularly drive while sleep-deprived.

You might try the following to reduce your chances of being in a drowsy driving crash:

  • Try to get a regular good night’s sleep.
  • Address a sleep disorder with your doctor.
  • Avoid driving after taking medication that causes drowsiness.
  • Pull over to rest during a long trip if you feel yourself getting sleepy or nodding off.
  • Do not rely too heavily on caffeine to keep you alert, as this method may not always be effective.
  • If possible, bring someone with you on a trip to trade driving shifts.

Additionally, you may want to keep a safe distance from a vehicle that is weaving in and out of lanes, crossing the center line or hitting the rumble strip. The driver might be sleepy or intoxicated – both of which you would want to avoid.

When you understand the risks of drowsy driving and take the steps to avoid it, you may keep from being involved in one of the estimated 100,000 crashes attributed to drowsy driving each year.
