4 tips for summer driving in Anchorage

Now that it is summer, the tourists are out in full swing in Anchorage. The roads are full of traffic jams and out-of-town drivers who are unfamiliar with the area. Heavier traffic means there is a higher likelihood of getting into a wreck

It is necessary to adjust your driving habits during the summertime. Here are some key pieces of advice for driving safely in the warmer and busier months:

1. Practice patience

Come to terms with the fact that you will likely experience delays. Unfortunately, this is not a reality you can avoid. While it is frustrating, practice managing your anger and going with the flow. Realize there is nothing you can do about it and it is not worth stressing yourself out over something you cannot control. Try leaving earlier to ensure you arrive at your destination on time.

2. Drive defensively

With more cars on the road and tourists who are new to the area, you need to be more alert than usual. Be constantly on the lookout for potential hazards so you can react promptly if something goes wrong. You will also need to be aware of any pedestrians or cyclists.

3. Check conditions beforehand

Get into the habit of checking the traffic and weather conditions before every trip. You can get all this information right on your smartphone or computer. Real-time traffic and weather updates will help you know what you will encounter on your trip. You may be able to beat the rush by taking alternate routes.

4. Give yourself more time

If you find yourself rushing through traffic and getting angry, start giving yourself more leeway. Again, leave 10, 20 or 30 minutes earlier than you normally would. This will help you arrive on time, keep your cool and avoid accidents.

Dealing with tourist drivers may be a grueling task, but it is something you need to put up with during the summer. This guidance is sure to help reduce the chances of you getting in a summer accident.
