Flying in inclement weather

Some Alaska residents may worry about inclement weather when they fly and they may wonder if it is safe to fly in these conditions.

If people are worried about flying during bad weather, it is a good idea to fly early in the morning or in the evening. USA Today says that this is because the atmosphere is typically more steady during these times. While some people may worry that a plane might crash if it flies when the weather is bad, it is important to remember that most of the time, inclement weather does not play a role in crashes.

When people see snow, they may worry that the airplane will not be able to take off. According to National Geographic, snow typically does not affect a flight. This is because aircraft usually need to meet certain requirements set by the Federal Aviation Administration. Most of the time, it is safe to fly in conditions that most people would consider inclement weather because airplanes are typically designed with these conditions in mind.  Snow is usually not a problem unless it piles too high or if there is slush. In these situations, the tires of the aircraft may experience drag, making it difficult for the plane to take off.

Some people might worry about their safety if there are strong winds. Wind usually does not interfere with flights, however. Wind may be a problem only if there is snow or rain on the runway, as the combination of these elements may sometimes make it difficult for the plane to land without skidding. Although planes can fly in many types of weather, passengers usually do not need to worry about flying through freezing rain. This is because ice can quickly build up on aircraft, causing most airlines to cancel flights in this type of weather.
